When to use it

A full solve rebuilds the whole day. That is the wrong tool when most of the day is already scheduled by hand and you only want help with what is left — for example the unassigned trips in one region, or a handful of trips you want to fit onto three particular vehicles.

Run NorthStar does exactly that. It works on any schedule you can edit: a manual baseline, or a solved run you have been editing.

The same engine as a full solve

The run uses the full scheduling engine with the same settings as a normal solve. Only the input is smaller: the trips and vehicles you chose.

Running it

Open the sheet

Press Run NorthStar in the toolbar, next to Re-solve. If you ticked trips in the unassigned panel first, the sheet opens with exactly those trips selected.
Choose the trips
The left column lists unassigned trips only, grouped by region. Tick a region to select every trip in it, then open it and untick any trip you want to leave out. Search finds a single trip by id, rider or address so you can add it on its own.

Narrow the list with the filters above it:
- Region match — place a trip by its pickup, its dropoff, either end, or only when both ends are in the region.
- Funding source, AMB / WCH and a pickup time range. Will-calls have no pickup time, so the time range never hides them.
Choose the vehicles

The right column lists vehicles by home region, with how many trips each already carries and a Reserve badge where it applies. Select them the same way: by region, one by one, or by search.
Check the footer, then run

The footer counts what you selected and lists anything NorthStar will add or leave out: linked trips that must come along, warnings, and selected trips it cannot schedule (with the reason). Press Run NorthStar. Most runs finish in a few seconds.

What NorthStar will and will not do

Situation	What happens
Trips already on a selected vehicle	Stay on it, in the same order. New trips can go before, between or after them.
Vehicles you did not select	Untouched.
A selected vehicle NorthStar does not need	Left empty and listed under Selected but not used. Selecting a vehicle allows NorthStar to use it; it does not require it.
An unassigned trip linked to one you selected	Comes along, so the pair is scheduled together. The footer names it.
A linked trip whose partner is already assigned	The partner stays where it is, and the selected trip is scheduled on its own.
A will-call whose outbound trip is on a vehicle you did not select	Left unassigned.
Partial-day cutoff	Not applied. You chose the trips, so a morning-only limit would only get in the way.

Reading the result

The result is applied to the schedule immediately, like any other edit. The sheet then shows:

Placed N of M trips and how many vehicles they went on.
Not placed — each trip NorthStar could not fit, with the reason. Those trips stay in the unassigned panel.
Selected but not used — vehicles left free.

The placed trips are marked in the schedule's edit history as Placed by a NorthStar run, so anyone reviewing the day can tell them apart from hand assignments.

Nothing applied

If someone changed the schedule while NorthStar was working, or the result broke a scheduling rule, nothing is applied and the sheet says so. Press Back to selection and run it again on the current schedule.

Undoing a run

Press Undo this run on the result, or later open the NorthStar runs chip at the top of the schedule and press Undo next to the run. The trips that run placed go back to unassigned.

Trips you moved or unassigned yourself after the run stay as you left them.
Undo is available until the next commit. After a commit, change those trips with ordinary edits.
